Technical drawings in AR

This HoloLens app enables the user to visualize and interact with virtual CAD models of the technical drawings.

The rigorous design communication between departments and costumers most of the times requires technical drawings. These huge pieces of paper, full of detailed and complex information, can difficult the design comprehension of personal with less technical background knowledge.

Solution

When the user uses the Hololens device and focuses on these specific drawings, the CAD models are disposed of. Moreover, the user may enable external features of the design as dynamic simulation, exploded view, visualize further detailed information, watch a video of its manufacturing simulation process and enable real size view.

The models were built in with SpaceClaim and AGX Momentum. The project was set up with Unity, Mixed Reality Toolkit and Vuforia and deployed to Microsoft HoloLens.

These 2 drawings are working as image targets (with Vuforia engine). When they are recognized, the Hololens disposes of the holograms od the respective drawings. At the same time, it enables buttons (MRTK), where the user can touch to manipulate the holograms. Other infocards and videos are also digitally availably. The technical drawings used:

Technical drawings may achieve complex levels in engineering but Augmented Reality technology has the power to simplify them. Designers and engineers can communicate easly based on visual prototypes, enabling co-creation. Also, customers and users can join the design process in another dimension.
